May 30, 2025 – On May 29, 2025, Arts Council Wood Buffalo hosted the Redefining Relevance Networking Luncheon at Shell Place — a meaningful gathering that brought together community leaders, artists, and changemakers to reflect on the value of arts and culture in building a vibrant, world-class region.

The event featured a keynote address from Alex Sarian, President & CEO of Arts Commons in Calgary, whose experience leading the transformation of one of Canada’s largest arts centres helped frame a powerful conversation about the importance of cultural infrastructure and investment in the creative sector. The luncheon also provided an opportunity to explore how arts and culture can strengthen communities, support economic development, and contribute to long-term civic vitality.

The event opened with a traditional blessing from Elder Johnny Fraser, and we were honoured to welcome Mayor Sandy Bowman, who offered remarks reaffirming his support for the arts in Wood Buffalo.

Representatives from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism, and Fort McMurray International Airport were among those in attendance, highlighting the broad cross-sector interest in the role of arts and culture in shaping the future of our region.

“We’re seeing growing momentum behind the idea that arts and culture are not just add-ons — they’re foundational to a strong, healthy, and resilient community,” said Liana Wheeldon, Executive Director of Arts Council Wood Buffalo. “Arts INC is a catalyst project for downtown revitalization in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, and gatherings like this luncheon help build the relationships and shared vision needed to bring it to life.”

Redefining Relevance was made possible with support from Bouchier, Thrifty Dutchess, and the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, whose partnership helped create space for this important dialogue about creativity, community, and future-building in our region.
